Hello, Internet Writers! I know its been...what? More than 3 MONTHS? My, how the time flies when you're not blogging. :) But, fortunately, or unfortunately if that's how you look at it, I'm back! I've seen more musicals, so I've got more product to work with.
Today, I'm doing "I Speak Six Languages" from the Broadway Musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Which is exactly what it sounds like, a musical about a spelling bee, but it's more than that, really. Wikipedia it, its a good summary of it. Oh, fun fact: Jesse Tyler Ferguson- Yes, Mitchell from Modern Family- was the original actor for my favorite character: Leaf Coneybear. He was sans beard then, but still.
Anyway, on with the blog!
"I speak six languages, every language easy, easy as the recipe for making Jello."
Every character of yours should have something they find easy. It's no fun to write about a character who struggles with everything. It's also ridiculously unrealistic. Even if you struggle with a ton of stuff, there's still something that you find easy. You may not like it, but it's easy.
"And everytime I stretch, I stretch without getting sore. I speak six languages, and I like the theme from 'Rocky', though I play Mozart more."
Characters should have fun little things they enjoy. Even if it's not relevant to the story, it's nice to know that they like blueberry pancakes, or what-have-you. They might have special skills or things they do. Maybe it's just me, but I really like to get to know the characters, it might make their actions easier to understand, or just make them seem more real.
"I am so sick an tired of always being the best and the brightest at every mass. Six lousy languages,"
Of course, not every little thing is going to work out for every character. Some ideas just don't fall into the character you want them to. It's like that shape game, where you put the shapes through the hole. You can't put the square into the circle hole. It just doesn't work. If you still want to use the thing, find a different character. It's simple.
So, there you go. A blog about a song about speaking six languages from a musical about a spelling bee.
Salut, mon amis!
